Hope for All Care should work for everyone

People use Hope for All Care on old phones, shared computers, with screen readers, with low vision, in stressful moments, and in a second language. We design for all of that.

Our target, not a certification

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. Hope for All Care Connect is a development build and has not had an independent accessibility audit, so we do not claim full conformance. Our approach to Ontario accessibility requirements (AODA) and Canadian privacy law, including PIPEDA and PHIPA, is under legal review.

What we have built in

  • Plain language. Short sentences and everyday words, especially on help and safety pages.
  • Keyboard access. Everything can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline and a “Skip to main content” link.
  • Screen readers. Form fields have labels, errors are announced and linked to the field, and updates such as “Saved” are announced.
  • Not colour alone. Statuses always use words and an icon, not just a colour.
  • Contrast and dark mode. Our colours are checked for WCAG AA contrast in both light and dark mode, which follows your device setting.
  • Large touch targets. Buttons and links are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
  • Reduced motion. If your device asks for less motion, we turn animations off.
  • Zoom and text size. Pages reflow on small screens and when text is enlarged.
  • No time pressure. Forms do not time out while you are typing. A safety report can be written at your own pace.

Known limitations

  • The site is currently available in English only. French is planned but not yet available.
  • Some pages have not yet been tested with every combination of screen reader and browser.
  • The development build has not had testing sessions with people who use assistive technology. We plan to do this before launch.
  • Maps are not provided; shelter pages link to directions in an external map service, which has its own accessibility.

Privacy and accessibility together

We keep forms as short as possible and only ask for what a feature needs. You can report a safety concern without an account. You can read more on our privacy page.

Tell us about a barrier

If something on Hope for All Care is hard to use, we want to know. Please see our contact page. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and the device or assistive technology you use, if you are comfortable sharing it.
